You’ve earned your education, and now it’s time for the ‘make it or break it’ certification exam. It’s okay to be stressed out; this is high stakes testing at its finest. Just remember, most certification exams allow a number of retakes if you don’t pass the first time. More importantly, you have worked hard to learn rather than just memorize information, and you can do this! You just need to learn how to study for a certification exam, and we’ve got you covered.

Review All of Your Notes

You took a lot of notes during your course, and now it’s time to review them. But don’t just read through them over and over again. Start at the beginning, and go through your notes, marking which sections you already understand very well with a green highlighter. Make a list of topics you need to address with a tutor, classmate you’ve befriended, or instructor as well as any specific questions that come up. Now, go get answers to your questions and review the topics you struggle with online or with someone else. When you go back through your notes, skip the green highlighted areas, focusing only on what you still need to work on. As you become confident in new areas, highlight them as well. When all of your notes are highlighted green, you will know you have a thorough understanding of the subject.

Take a Sample Test

Most certification exams make sample tests available for students to practice with. Although the questions on these tests will be completely different from the actual exam you take, taking a sample test will allow you to become familiar with the testing format and types of questions you will face. This preparation will make it easier to relax on test day because you will know what to expect.

Practice, Practice, Practice!

If your certification exam includes a clinical portion, spend as much time practicing as you can until you feel confident you will be able to perform during the exam. A lot of people feel nervous when they’re being evaluated by someone watching them complete a task, so the more comfortable you feel with the procedure, the less on edge you will feel during the exam.

If you follow these tips for preparing for a certification exam, you’ll be well on your way to achieving success. Whatever you do, try not to stress too much. Get enough sleep the day before the exam; eat a good breakfast; and remember that you know your stuff. Learn more in the ultimate guide to studying.
