Phlebotomy technicians do a lot, but their primary responsibility is to draw blood. Although a phlebotomy certification isn’t required in most states to draw blood, it is still an important step in maximizing your hireability and proving your skill. Read on to learn how to become certified to draw blood.

Do I Need To Be Certified To Draw Blood?

The only states that require phlebotomy technicians to be certified are California, Nevada, Washington, and Louisiana, but even in other states, certification is prefered. Receiving certification shows potential employers that you take your job seriously, and it also prepares you for a job that can be more difficult than it seems.

How To Become Certified to Draw Blood

There are three organizations that offer phlebotomy certification, including The American Society of Phlebotomy Technicians, ASCP, and American Medical Technologists. Each organization has different requirements that must be met before you are allowed to take the exam. Generally, you will need to have completed a phlebotomy program or worked as a phlebotomy technician in order to take the certification exam. If you meet the requirements, you will pay a fee and take the exam. If you pass, you will receive your certificate in the mail and/or online.

Practice Makes Perfect

One of the requirements for taking your certification exam is having completed a certain number of blood draws successfully. That’s one of the most important parts of your certification. It proves that you are a competent phlebotomy technician, something employers are always looking for. There’s nothing more frustrating for patients than having an incompetent phlebotomy technician attempt to draw their blood, and this is one of the things patients complain about most frequently. That’s why so many employers require certification now. When you become certified to draw blood, you signal to employers that you can keep patients happy by drawing blood successfully
