Being a dialysis technician can be a difficult job, but most people agree that it’s pretty rewarding. One of the reasons it is so fulfilling is that you are helping people everyday. Interpersonal skills are important for a dialysis technician, so he or she can manage the various social situations encountered in the role.

What are Interpersonal Skills?

Interpersonal skills are your abilities in dealing with other people. They include your ability to gauge other people’s feelings, communicate information clearly, and listen attentively. Managing your manners, demeanor, and body language would also be considered personal skills.

Why are Interpersonal Skills Important for a Dialysis Technician?

In a previous blog, we mentioned the importance of having patience as a dialysis technician, since you encounter patients on their worst days. Minding your manners will go a long way toward putting patients at ease, but that isn’t the only important interpersonal skill for you. Learning to communicate clearly and listening attentively are interpersonal skills that will be addressed during dialysis technician training.

Practicing Interpersonal Skills

If you are worried about your interpersonal skills, it’s time to practice. One of the best ways to do this if you are planning on using your interpersonal skills in healthcare management is to volunteer at a nursing home. This will give you an opportunity to interact with sick people, practice your patience, and understand the rewards of working in the healthcare industry. If you really want help, consider asking a friend or classmate to volunteer with you. Ask him or her to observe your actions and give you advice on how to improve. Then, truly listen to what they have to say and see if their advice can improve your interpersonal skills.
