Listed as one of the U.S. Department of Labor’s “Bright Outlook” occupations, employment of Pharmacy Technicians is projected to grow 22% within the next 7 years with 100,000 or more job openings.

Learn more about the duties of a Pharmacy Technician: what is an average workday like, what career opportunities might you have, and how to get certified and employed.

Duties of a Pharmacy Tech

Pharmacy Technicians work directly with pharmacists, although the duties may be limited by state laws. As a Pharmacy Tech, you’ll be responsible for assisting Pharmacists in providing medication, other health products and information, and educating patients.

Clerical tasks, such as assisting patients with insurance forms, managing inventory, handling money, using computers and answering telephones are also some of your duties as a Pharmacy Technician. You will also be performing repetitive tasks such as labeling bottles, counting pills, and preparing prescribed medication for patients.

An Average Workday

Being a Pharmacy Technician can be stressful at times, especially when a patient’s well-being is at stake. You are expected to take directions from the Pharmacist, and yet, you must also be able to work independently.

Accuracy is critical to pharmacy duties, even in stressful or emergency situations. Along with 6-8 hours of standing on your feet per day, as a Pharmacy Technician, you must possess good manual dexterity and provide excellent customer service skills. Additionally, you must be able to interact well with other pharmacy co-workers and other healthcare professionals.

Career Opportunities

Taking a Pharmacy Technician course can help you prepare for a long career in this growing field. Once you have completed the program, your career path can go from Pharmacy Technician to Certified Pharmacy Technician, Lead Pharmacy Technician, Senior Certified Pharmacy Technician, or Retail Pharmacist.
