Embarking on a new job search is intimidating, but that doesn’t mean you can’t do it. NYC is full of opportunities for qualified CNAs; you just have to know how to qualify, where to find them, and how to stand out from the competition. Follow these steps, and you’ll have your first  job as a Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) in no time.

How to Qualify for CNA jobs in NYC

In order to qualify for a CNA job, you need to have your CNA license. The licensing process requires you to complete a certified CNA program. This certification program will teach you the necessary skills to succeed as a CNA in NYC. It will also prepare you for the New York State Nursing Home Nurse Aide Competency Examination, which you must pass in order to earn your license.

Where to find CNA jobs in NYC

Once you’ve received your CNA license, you will need to find jobs that you can apply for. The best place to start is where you have connections. Find out if your doctor’s office is hiring or if a friend in the healthcare field knows of any openings. Being recommended by a current employee is a great way to move to the top of a list of candidates.

If you can’t find any positions within your network, search job boards such as Indeed and Monster for CNA positions. You may also want to check out New York healthcare staffing agencies such as Horizon Healthcare Staffing to see what they have available.

How to Stand Out From the Competition in NYC

Thankfully, there are a lot of CNA positions out there. If you are struggling to make the cut, you may want to evaluate your healthcare resume and interview skills. If it’s just a matter of not having enough experience, consider finding a non-certified position caring for someone in their home to earn experience and demonstrate your work ethic. These positions are often posted on Craigslist, in your local paper, or on websites such as Care.com.

If you follow these tips, you will be well on your way to working as a CNA. If you really want to stand out from the competition, consider earning another certificate. Getting additional certifications may increase your likelihood of getting hired because you will be able to fit in multiple roles within the organization.
