What Does a Patient Care Technician Do?

Patient care technicians are responsible for caring for their patients. They do this by helping with everyday tasks like bathing, shaving, eating, dressing, and walking. Patient care technicians are also responsible for taking vital signs and drawing blood. Patient care technicians work in many different environments, and their tasks vary depending on workplace, but they are the first line of care for patients and spend more time with patients than the rest of the healthcare team.

How to Become a PCT

Patient care technicians are trained in 120 hour training programs like the one offered at The Manhattan Institute. These programs teach you what you need to know to be successful in the positions you may find yourself in. Course subjects include vital signs, medical terminology, phlebotomy, anatomy and physiology, patient preparation, blood collection techniques, specimen collection, pharmacology, OSHA standards, and universal precautions.

How Long Is Patient Care Technician Training?

Training to become a patient care technician takes 120 course hours. Our program can be completed in as few as 4 weeks full time. If you prefer to take night or weekend classes, you can still complete the program in 7 weeks, allowing you to get started in your new career quickly.
